Are you feeling a little down as the last day of Easter hols officially comes to an end? For those that had already homeschooled, or worked from home, things aren't much different; but for people with a regular away-from-home work schedule, the kids who would normally go back to school, and the parents that now need to juggle their work with homeschooling, the spring holiday may have been their only opportunity to get away. And while many are getting a break, the necessary workers are working long hours to keep things running for the rest of us; hopefully they were able to enjoy some semblance of a break over the holiday times too. So, what does a holiday look like without being able to spend time with our friends or family outside of the home?
We were meant to be in Arizona and California for 3 weeks, spending much needed time with friends and family who we hadn't seen in over a year. Due to Covid-19, our flights were cancelled and we were forced to spend the whole 2-week holiday in lockdown isolation with only our small family to spend it with. To tell you how our holiday went, we will play the game "What we were meant to do -vs- how it actually turned out!"
29 March : What we were meant to do - fly to Phoenix, Arizona
29 March : What we actually did - Took our chicken on a bike ride to get groceries (she was feeling very
cooped up!)

31 March : What we were meant to do - hiking the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon
 |
| The last time Neva was at Grand Canyon |
31 March : What we actually did - Hiked the local Bray head and cut my fringe
 |
| We took the spiky gorse trail to avoid people |
 |
| It's a bit short, but it'll grow back before this is all over! |
1 April : What we were meant to do - Bouldering in Joshua Tree, CA and visit LA cycling family
1 April : What we actually did - Made Mexican food and had a social-distanced hang-out with my neighbor and good friend Paddy
 |
| The photo shot in B&W unbeknownst to me! |
 |
| Avocado tacos, black beans, and plantains |
3 April : What we were meant to do - Knott's Berry Farm Theme Park & Amy Winehouse exhibit at Grammy museum in LA
 |
| For those of you who don't know, Knott's is a Peanuts gang themed adventure park. My dad and I shared a Peanuts fandom, so Charlie Brown and all his friends hold a special place in my heart. My dad gave this gem to me at my wedding, which I'll have to look at while imagining going on the famous log ride. Next time Neva! |
3 April : What we actually did - Homeschooling day 'who knows' and created a vegan White Russian
 |
| Neva working on a tiger facts research project |
 |
| Decided to get creative with booze someone brought over Halloween 2017. White Russian made with coconut milk. |
4 April : What we were meant to do - Beach time with my Aunt Cheri and evening dinner in El Centro for my nephew Joseph's 17th birthday (celebrated one day late). Happy Birthday Joseph!!!
 |
| We miss you and love you Joseph, I hope you had a happy, happy birthday! |
4 April : What we actually did - Made jasmine boba tea, vegan cauliflower "wings", picked dandelion weeds in garden to make dandelion tea from, sorted where to hang pictures, and played board games.
5-8 April : What we were meant to do - Spend time with family and see old friends in hometown
 |
| I miss my niece! Oh yeah, and my sister too I guess! |
 |
| Me and my Momma, I can't wait until I can see her again! |
5-8 April : What we actually did - Made strawberry rhubarb jam, made plague masks, dressed up in said masks and hiked our Bray Head
9-14 April : What we were meant to do - Cabin the the Arizona woods with family; enjoy Easter weekend together
 |
| Okay, not this rustic, but we were meant to be in a cabin. |
9-14 April : What we actually did - Neighborhood exploration which resulted in meeting new friends and finding a delicious smelling plant, backyard play with butterfly feeding and a rube Goldberg device out of stuff laying around, 3-hour online friend play date. Painting the kitchen, staining the outside fence, an Easter water fight, and Neva created a book-inspired recipe and made a gluten-free tuna noodle casserole.
15 April : What we were meant to do - Drive to Tucson to see The Hu heavy metal Mongolian throat singing band in concert
15 April : What we actually did - Made gluten free pancakes with real maple syrup, and made a robot out of legos.
 |
| My dad always used to make me a Mickey Mouse pancake; so the tradition continues! |
16-17 April : What we were meant to do - family time in the Arizona cabin
16-17 April : What we actually did - Chatted to neighbor from window and Zzzzzzzzzz
 |
| Hello Liz! I love our chats! |
 |
| You can tell my husband took the picture since his finger always insists on making an appearance. |
18 - 19 April : What we were meant to do - See friends and hike in Flagstaff and Sedona, AZ
18 - 19 April : What we actually did - I cut Christian's hair, we made more rhubarb jam, I started sketching an idea for a mural, Neva worked on a stop animation project, and we dressed snazzy to socially distance hike with friends around the sea, the neighborhood and Bray Head
And tomorrow, 20 April, we were meant to hop on our plane back to Ireland and arrive home 21 April. What will tomorrow bring? We can be sure there will be homeschooling and lots of shenanigans. I hope your Easter hols were just as fun as ours despite the likely change of plans. Happy spring time from our family to yours!
